Indie Gems: The Skeleton Twins

What the hell happened to us?

Twins Milo (Bill Hader) and Maggie (Kristen Wiig) haven't spoken to each other in ten years. Coincidentally, they both attempt suicide on the same day, though Maggie gets stopped before the act while Milo gets stopped after it. She decides he should move back to New York with her to figure things out.

I was a little worried about this film because I'm not a Kristen Wiig fan, and her attempts at drama in the past have been very lackluster. She's clearly the weakest link in this cast, but she's not bad. She and Hader have excellent chemistry, though it's him that soars in this film.

Supporting cast includes Luke Wilson and Ty Burrell, who are all great in their roles as well. The film finds a good balance between comedy and drama, even if the ending is eye rolling predictable. Suicide is the main theme here, and the film goes to some dark places, but never for long

Grade: A-

Memorable Quote: "I've never taken a shit before." - Milo (Bill Hader)

  1. Glad you loved this one. Of one my top ten movies this year. Though I loved Wiig a little more than that, she's in my top 5 lead actresses.

I loved the dance scene, did not you? :)))

    1. That was adorable! I normally hate Kristen Wiig, but this is probably the best I've seen her.

  4. So great that you liked it! Hader was amazing in that and I really liked how warm and optimistic the film ended up being

    1. Oh for sure. It easily could've ended in a really fucked up way.

  6. I've been meaning to watch this, but I agree on Wiig's dramatic turns being lackluster (and yet I still watch her movies). Hopefully this changes my opinion on her dramatic roles. Good review.

    1. Yeah, I don't mind her in some SNL type skits, but I've never been a huge fan. This is one of the better things she's done for sure.

  7. i actually LOVE kristen, but i too don't love her in drama. it just doesn't seem natural to her. didn't mind her here, but didn't love her. hader was along the same lines for me. decent, but not great.

    1. Yeah, drama definitely isn't for her at all. I hated Girl Most Likely.

  8. Yeah, it's predictable, but that lip-syncing scene is probably my favorite from last year. Love Hader's and Wiig's chemistry, and it was great to see Wilson in a good movie again.

  9. I absolutely loved Hader and Wiig in this film. Their lip-syncing scene made me absolutely happy for the entirety of the day...I must have re-watched it a dozen times!!
