Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: College

It's another TV week over at Wandering Through The Shelves and this week we're talking about college. This was hard for me, because I don't watch Community, Greek, or Undeclared. Most of the big college shows I missed so I had to reach a bit. I wouldn't say I love any of these shows, but I watched them and college played a small part

1) The Big Bang Theory

The main characters in this show all work at a university. I used to love this until Mayim Bialik showed up with her ridiculous character of Amy Farrah Fowler and ruined it all for me. I haven't watched in years.

2) The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

The later seasons got to college, even though it was mostly just a set up. This was a show I'd usually watch after school.

3) Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Another show where the later seasons started dealing with college. This show in retrospect is so bad. They didn't give one single fuck about continuity. I remember getting in a fight with my dad over a song they had on the official soundtrack because he said it was about drugs and I said it was about fighting. Guess who was right. Hint: Not the 12 year old girl.

  1. I've seen an episode or two of all of these but have never watch any with regularity. I've never understood all the shouting about Big Bang Theory, I found it puerile and foolish.

I had to cast around a bit for picks too and went with an all comedy lineup as well.

Blue Mountain State (2010-2011)-Risqué, amiable comedy from the now defunct Spike TV network about the "Mountain Goats" the hard partying football team of fictional university Blue Mountain State. While much of it took place on a football field this was more concerned with the crazy doings of the team’s members, chief among them Alex Moran (Darin Brooks), Craig Shilo (Sam Jones III) and scene stealing dunderhead Thad Castle (a fearlessly comic Alan Ritchson).

Boston Common (1996-1997)-Easy going and slightly goofy Virginia country boy Boyd Pritchett (Anthony Clark) accompanies his sister Wyleen (Hedy Burress) when she begins college in Boston. What’s supposed to be a short trip becomes permanent when Boyd falls in love with fellow student Joy (Traylor Howard) despite the fact she has a steady, but pompous, boyfriend, and decides to stay much to Wyleen's dismay. Being handy he gets a job as the college repairman sharing an apartment with Wyleen (and frustrating her attempts to spread her wings) while pursuing Joy and becoming enmeshed in no end of antic comedy. A huge hit in its first season this nosedived in its second when moved to a terrible time slot.

Delta House (1978)-Watered down but still amusing sitcom derived from the megahit Animal House about the rowdy Delta fraternity house at Faber College with several of the movie’s cast returning. This also served as an early spotlight for Michelle Pfeiffer as “The Bombshell”

    1. I haven't seen any of your picks. I recall advertisements for Blue Mountain State. That's about it. I thought TBBT was hilarious when it first came out. There's a video on youtube called "TBBT's Adorkable misogyny" that I watched that does make me see it in a different light now.

  2. Wow! We match with 2!! I had to stretch on this as well. I didn't pick Fresh Prince because I hardly saw any of that show. I watched Sabrina and it was/is bad but, for some reason, I continued to watch it. I have tried, many times to watch Big Bang but could not find it funny at all. I knew these people for real, in University. I don't find Sheldon funny at all and wish he would slip on banana and fly out the window.

  3. It's a shame you quit TBBT! I think it's still a funny show, yeah Amy ain't the best and the actress is even worse but the rest is cool :)

    1. I've still caught episodes here and there and it's always amusing when she's not on screen lol.

  4. Never seen Big Bang Theory and never will. I'm just glad it's finally going to end and yes, fuck Blossom. Fresh Prince aka the Carlton Show. Carlton was why I watched that show, he was the fucking bomb.

  5. I'm a fan of The Big Bang Theory and a big fan of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Nice picks. I saw a few episodes here and there of Sabrina but never got into it. Never saw the episode that gif is from. Wow.

  6. So, uh, I only watched the Fresh Prince, and likely bailed on it by the time they got to college. I've only seen one full episode of the Big Bang Theory and it was in a waiting room where I was about to get a scan of my internal organs. My point? I have no idea.

But yes, Carlton was the f--king bomb.

(sorry, it's late and I'm delirious)

  7. I have not seen Sabrina the Teenage Witch since it went off air so I have no idea how badly it has aged. Anyway...I am looking forward to the new adaptation coming.

Love The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The Big Bang Theory - I don't watch it, so I thought Mayim Bialik's character was there from the beginning.

    1. No, she didn't show up until season 5 or so? It was better without her.
