Thursday Movie Picks: Meet Cute

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves follows the "meet cute" trope. I'm not going to lie, I had to look this up. I've never heard this term before. It seems obvious in hindsight but Meet Cute is "characters that meet under cute circumstances." So here are a few films I enjoy where that happens.

1) La La Land

Mia and Sebastian have a bad run in at the club, but their official meeting at a garden party where Mia makes his band play I Ran is about as cute as it gets.

2) 5 to 7

Brian and Arielle have an adorably awkward first meeting while smoking cigarettes and begin an affair that can only last between 5 and 7 pm.  Did I mention Arielle's husband has a mistress too? This is a great film, and I highly recommend. Especially if you're an Anton Yelchin fan.

3) (500) Days of Summer

This isn't about how Tom meets Summer, but how he meets his likely eventual girlfriend. In the lobby at a job interview that they're both competing for, and she has the ironic name of Autumn.

  1. Well, I didn’t know the meaning behind this...hahahaaaa. I just went with cute but I think my picks would still fit. I have only seen La La Land and their meeting would make it cute. Maybe, one day, I will see 500 Days of Summer but it just sounds too ooshy wooshy for me.

    1. lol I had to look it up so no judgement here. 500 days isn't very romantic, it's kind of the opposite of it. It's really interesting.

  2. We share 500 Days of Summer! And damn, I can't believe I didn't think of La La Land myself. I adore that movie.

  4. I was so disappointed in La La Land. It had been praised to the skies before I saw it and I found it exceedingly average.

I liked JGL in 500 Days of Summer but I can't abide that Deschanel girl so it isn't something I'll ever watch again.

I'm unfamiliar with 5 to 7 but it sounds interesting.

I decided to do a theme within the theme as a tribute to one of the queens of romantic comedy-Doris Day.

Pillow Talk (1959)-Ultrachic interior designer Jan Morrow (Doris) and wolfish songwriter Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) battle over their shared party line without ever meeting. One night when Jan is enduring a bad unwanted date with a client’s drunken son at a nightclub Brad sees her dancing. Instantly attracted and knowing he’s poison to her if she hears his name he pretends to be Texas rancher Rex Stetson. Laying on the charm and aw shucks naiveté he sweeps Jan off her feet soon falling for her himself but when Jan’s other beau (and friend of Brad’s) Jonathan (Tony Randall) discovers the deception he hurries to let Jan know she’s being taken for a ride. Complications ensue but true love eventually wins the day.

The Glass Bottom Boat (1966)-Jennifer Nelson’s (Doris) father Axel (Arthur Godfrey) runs a tourist boat with a glass bottom off Catalina Island and to help business Jennifer swims underneath dressed as a mermaid complete with tale. One day Bruce Templeton (Rod Taylor) hooks her fin and they bicker until he returns her costume. Later she discovers he’s her new boss at her day job in a research lab, tensions and sparks continue to fly.

Lucky Me (1954)-Candy Williams (Doris) is a member of a cash strapped traveling vaudeville troupe stranded in Miami who are forced to work at a hotel when their leader Hap (Phil Silvers) tries to scam the place out of a lavish meal for them. Staying at the hotel is Broadway producer Dick Carson (Robert Cummings) working on his new show. The superstitious Candy goes for a walk one morning and in trying to avoid a black cat crossing her path jumps to the side causing Dick to smash his car into a wall while she walks on blithely unawares. Dick takes the car to a garage and the mechanic loans him the garage’s jalopy while he works on the car. Heading back to the hotel he again espies Candy now jumping along the sidewalk to avoid cracks and distracted he runs into a fire hydrant. Candy apologizes and takes him for a mechanic, he plays along which eventually leads to complications before love and Broadway success for all wraps things up.

    1. La La Land was massively overhyped. I liked it, but I thought I was going to fall in love with it based on all the TIFF hype and I just didn't. I rewatched it not too long ago and it held up better than I remembered at least.

I haven't seen any of your picks this week, but I'm familiar with the first one by title anyways.

    2. If you see any of the three make it Pillow Talk. It's fluffy and puffy and silly but still a delight. It has some very 50's sensibilities but it's also progressive in its way Doris is an independent very successful career woman with a drop dead great apartment.

She and Rock share the sort of chemistry you can't manufacture, Tony Randall gives a gem of a performance and the sets and especially her clothes are A-MAZ-ING!!

It was the first in a string of films that placed her at number one at the box office four times within 10 years during which she was ranked every year, the only performer to hold that record.

    3. Of those, Pillow Talk is definitely what I'd go for first. Thanks for the rec!

  7. Great list! I found La La Land and 5 to 7 okay - definitely agree to giving it a shot if one is a fan of Anton Yelchin. 500 Days of Summer was lovely.

  8. I LOVE that you included 5 to 7!! The writer/director actually came to Twin Cities Film Fest but I missed that screening, so I saw it like a year later on rental. I loved it!! It's so well-written, beautiful and heartbreaking... such an underrated film!
