Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition - Romantic Tropes: Love Triangle

As we take Wandering Through The Shelves' final romantic trope to the small screen, we're going to talk about one of my least favorite tropes of all time. The love triangle. I find these rarely make for an interesting watch, but they're constantly used so there's got to be something there. Here are three shows I watched where triangle featured prominently.

1) True Blood -
The Sookie/Bill/Eric triangle went on way longer than necessary, I'm assuming because Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are married in real life. Everyone knows that Eric and Sookie belonged together. Those are facts, I make the rules.

2) Insecure -
I think this show is an example where a triangle of sorts actually works. Issa and Lawrence break up in season one, and she sees two other men, Daniel and Nathan at various points in the series, but also goes back to Lawrence. It works, Issa is always funny and I can't think of a better show that depicts the stress of modern dating.

3) Agents of SHIELD -
This show has probably the worst example of a forced love triangle I've seen in a long time. There are two characters on this show, Fitz and Simmons. They are introduced as besties, but they clearly are on their way to something more, then a few seasons in they add a rando to come between them and Simmons has to think about who she loves more and it's just dumb and terrible. Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge had wonderful chemistry and the show through the dumbest shit at their characters. Yes, I'm still bitter.

  1. I rooted for Sookie and Eric too... I stopped watching after season 5 (I think??) and just read about the finale, so I'm glad I stopped. pffft.

    1. I pretend this show ended in S4, everything that came after was truly horrendous.

  3. I'm so glad I stopped watching Agents of SHIELD. The only thought of someone getting in the way of FitzSimmons is painful.

  4. The only one of these I watched, and that was intermittently, is True Blood. You know I'm not one for the gore but season one engaged me so I kept up into season 2 but then it all just to be too much and I stopped watching regularly. I'd check back every now and then to see if I wanted to start again but never did.

I have heard of Agents of Shield but know nothing much about it. The other is new to me.

I had the very devil of a time this week. At first the only thing I could come up with was the Rachel/Ross/Joey triangle on Friends but I never bought into that one since it was obvious that Ross and Rachel were always going to end up together.

I ended up going back to three I watched in reruns when I was a kid and still catch an occasional episode of on one of the nostalgia stations.

Our Miss Brooks (1952-1956)-High school English teacher Constance Brooks (Eve Arden) is hopelessly enamored with handsome but obtuse science teacher Phillip Boynton (Robert Rockwell). They exist in a sort of limbo land where Mr. Boynton takes it for granted that Miss Brooks will always be there. That is until Connie moves to a new school and the gym teacher Gene Talbot (Gene Barry) tries to sweep her off her feet. At last Boynton’s dander is riled up enough to fight for her.

The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-1963)-High school student Dobie Gillis (Dwayne Hickman) is hopelessly in love with Thalia Menninger (Tuesday Weld) who hardly acknowledges his existence while Zelda Gilroy (Sheila James) likewise pines for him. Even after Thalia moves away and Dobie, as the title says, constantly falls for a series of beautiful and unattainable girls Zelda continues to yearn.

Petticoat Junction (1963-1970)-When crop duster Steve Elliott’s (Mike Minor) plane crashes near the Shady Rest Hotel in Hooterville he’s taken in to recover by proprietress Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet) and her three daughters Billie Jo (Meredith MacRae), Bobbie Jo (Lori Saunders) and Betty Jo (Linda Kaye Henning). During his convalescence he and Billie Jo start to date but once he decides to stay in town, he realizes it’s Betty Jo that he really loves.

  6. I always felt bad watching True Blood cause I'm sure Stephen Moyer is a nice guy but I could never even fathom it for some reason. I was Eric and Sookie and than I was Sookie and literally anyone else. I just didn't buy her and Bill!

  8. Seeing True Blood picked a few times this week makes me want to rewatch it, but then like The Walking Dead, I remember how it went downhill. Totally on board for Team Eric. Nice picks!
