2021 Emmy Nominations

The Emmy nominations are finally upon us, and they're actually...pretty good? Of course there are some awful snubs but a lot of my favorite shows like Ted Lasso, Wandavision, The Crown, and The Mandalorian got 20+ nominations. Boy do I have THOUGHTS!

Outstanding Drama Series
“The Boys”
“Bridgerton”
“The Crown”
“The Handmaid’s Tale”
“Lovecraft Country”
“The Mandalorian”
“Pose”
“This Is Us”
I'm glad the Emmys didn't snub Lovecraft Country like others did. The Boys made me laugh. I know a lot of people love that show but outside of Karl Urban I just could not get into it. Emmys are still holding onto This Is Us for dear life.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Uzo Aduba, “In Treatment”
Olivia Colman, “The Crown”
Emma Corrin, “The Crown”
Elisabeth Moss, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
MJ Rodriguez, “Pose”
Jurnee Smollett, “Lovecraft Country”
MJ Rodriguez is my favorite nominee here. She's been consistently snubbed for her work on Pose and now in its final season she becomes the first trans woman to be nominated in this category. I'm glad Smollett was nominated too, and of course Emma Corrin for The Crown.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Sterling K. Brown, “This Is Us”
Jonathan Majors, “Lovecraft Country”
Josh O’Connor, “The Crown”
Regé-Jean Page, “Bridgerton”
Billy Porter, “Pose”
Matthew Rhys, “Perry Mason”
I'm so happy for Jonathan Majors. It's about time he got a major nomination for his role. Billy Porter was outstanding in this last season of Pose. I'm happy for him too.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Gillian Anderson, “The Crown”
Helena Bonham Carter, “The Crown”
Madeline Brewer, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Ann Dowd, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Aunjanue Ellis, “Lovecraft Country”
Emerald Fennell, “The Crown”
Yvonne Strahovski, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Samira Wiley, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
First off, holy shit. There were other shows airing besides The Crown and The Handmaid's Tale. Fennell's nomination feels more like a kudos to her for her recent Oscar win than for her work as Camilla. Helena Bonham Carter had even less to do than she did. I was rooting for Wumie Mosaku for Lovecraft Country and Domnique Jackson for Pose. They were amazing in their shows and I can't believe Jackson hasn't gotten a single nomination for Pose. On the Handmaid side of things, I'm really happy for Madeline Brewer, I think she deserved this nomination the most.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Giancarlo Esposito, “The Mandalorian”
O-T Fagbenle, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
John Lithgow, “Perry Mason”
Tobias Menzies, “The Crown”
Max Minghella, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Chris Sullivan, “This is Us”
Bradley Whitford, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Michael Kenneth Williams, “Lovecraft Country”
I can't believe the only dude not nominated for The Handmaid's Tale was the one they actually killed off this season. Sorry, Joseph Fiennes. Psyched for O-T though. Michael Kenneth Williams is another nomination I love. The Emmys sure love Giancarlo.

Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series
“I May Destroy You”
“Mare of Easttown”
“The Queen’s Gambit”
“The Underground Railroad”
“WandaVision”
I still have to see The Underground Railroad but I loved the other four. I'm shocked Small Axe was snubbed. I'm not sure if this category has to cut off at 5, but I really expected that show to have more of a presence. It makes me wonder if voters had issues with it being separate movies but claiming anthology?

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Michaela Coel, “I May Destroy You”
Cynthia Erivo, “Genius: Aretha”
Elizabeth Olsen, “WandaVision”
Anya Taylor-Joy, “The Queen’s Gambit”
Kate Winslet, “Mare of Easttown”
GOD I LOVE THIS CATEGORY. I haven't seen Erivo in Genius so I was hoping for Tessa Thompson in Sylvie's Love, but honestly no complaints here.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Paul Bettany, “WandaVision”
Hugh Grant, “The Undoing”
Ewan McGregor, “Halston”
Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Hamilton”
Leslie Odom Jr., “Hamilton”
I squealed when Paul Bettany's name was mentioned. Happy for Grant too. Halston is the only show I haven't seen here. You can't go wrong with Hamilton either.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Renée Elise Goldsberry, “Hamilton”
Kathryn Hahn, “WandaVision”
Moses Ingram, “The Queen’s Gambit”
Julianne Nicholson, “Mare of Easttown”
Jean Smart, “Mare of Easttown”
Phillipa Soo, “Hamilton”
For a brief moment this morning I thought Kathryn Hahn was snubbed for Wandavision and I was livid, but alas, it was just a typo. I'm shocked Moses Ingram got a nomination for Queen's Gambit over Marielle Heller. Was anyone predicting that? She was good but poor Marielle always gets screwed over. (Yes, I'm still bitching about her Best Director snub at the Oscars) I wish Teyonah Parris would've made it in for Wandavision too. *sigh*

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Thomas Brodie-Sangster, “The Queen’s Gambit”
Daveed Diggs, “Hamilton”
Paapa Essiedu, “I May Destroy You”
Jonathan Groff, “Hamilton”
Evan Peters, “Mare of Easttown”
Anthony Ramos, “Hamilton”
Paapa Essiedu is such an awesome surprise! He was excellent in I May Destroy You. Thomas Brodie-Sangster getting in over Bill Camp is a cool surprise too, because he was really good. Peters for Mare of Eastown is an awesome nomination too. Happy for Diggs and Gross. I feel like Ramos' nomination has more to do with In The Heights than Hamilton. He was good, but he didn't stand out as much as some of the other featured players. I can't complain though, I really like him.

Outstanding Comedy Series
“Black-ish”
“Cobra Kai”
“Emily in Paris”
“Hacks”
“The Flight Attendant”
“The Kominsky Method”
“Pen15”
“Ted Lasso”
I'm team Ted Lass obviuosly. Cobra Kai and Pen15 getting in were huge surprises. I erally need to see The Flight Attendant, Hacks and Pen15..they're on the list. LOL Emily in Paris...

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Aidy Bryant, “Shrill”
Kaley Cuoco, “The Flight Attendant”
Allison Janney, “Mom”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish”
Jean Smart, “Hacks”
I've been meaning to watch Shrill for years and I never do, but I'm proud of Aidy. I'm also happy for Kaley. She went how many seasons of The Big Bang Theory without getting recognized while her garbage co-start Mayim Bialik got 4 nominations? Yikes.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, “Black-Ish”
Michael Douglas, “The Kominsky Method”
William H. Macy, “Shameless”
Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”
Kenan Thompson, “Kenan”
#TeamSudeikis

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Aidy Bryant, “Saturday Night Live”
Hannah Einbinder, “Hacks”
Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live”
Rosie Perez, “The Flight Attendant”
Cecily Strong, “Saturday Night Live”
Juno Temple, “Ted Lasso”
Hannah Waddingham, “Ted Lasso”
I'm so happy for Juno and Hannah! I felt good about Hannah getting in but I wasn't sure about Juno. Cecily Strong grabbing her second nomination makes me happy too. I saw a lot of people predicting Zosia Mamet for The Flight Attendent so Rosie Perez getting this was a surprise.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Carl Clemons-Hopkins, “Hacks”
Brett Goldstein, “Ted Lasso”
Brendan Hunt, “Ted Lasso”
Nick Mohammed, “Ted Lasso”
Paul Reiser, “The Kominsky Method”
Jeremy Swift, “Ted Lasso”
Kenan Thompson, “Saturday Night Live”
Bowen Yang, “Saturday Night Live”
I never would've guessed so many Ted Lasso guys would be nominated. I'm bias, so this is awesome. I'm really happy for Bowen Yang too. He's the first featured performer to be nominated for SNL. I love that for him.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series
“Conan”
“The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”
John Oliver deserves this for his Adam Driver bit alone.

Outstanding TV Movie
“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square”
“Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia”
“Oslo”
“Sylvie’s Love”
“Uncle Frank”
I've only seen Sylvie's Love, which I enjoyed. Oslo and Uncle Frank are in my queues.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Alexis Bledel, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Claire Foy, “The Crown”
McKenna Grace, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Sophie Okonedo, “Ratched”
Phylicia Rashad, “This is Us”
I was rootinf for McKenna Grace so I'm glad she's nominated here. At age 15, she's the youngest to ever be nominated in this category. The Emmys must really miss Claire Foy. Her cameo in the Crown was like 2 minutes..

Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Don Cheadle, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”
Charles Dance, “The Crown”
Timothy Olyphant, “The Mandalorian”
Courtney B. Vance, “Lovecraft Country”
Carl Weathers, “The Mandalorian”
And if the Emmys love Claire Foy, they REALLY love Don Cheadle because this nomination is hilarious. All 90 seconds of his performance where he did nothing. Did they only watch the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Did they not get to Carl Lumbly's part?

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Jane Adams, “Hacks”
Yvette Nicole Brown, “A Black Lady Sketch Show”
Bernadette Peters, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”
Issa Rae, “A Black Lady Sketch Show”
Maya Rudolph, “Saturday Night Live”
Kristen Wiig, “Saturday Night Live”
YNB is so much fun on social media and is always so supportive of other artists. I'm glad she gets to add "Emmy nominated" to her resume.

Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Alec Baldwin, “Saturday Night Live”
Dave Chappelle, “Saturday Night Live”
Morgan Freeman, “The Kominsky Method”
Daniel Kaluuya, “Saturday Night Live”
Daniel Levy, “Saturday Night Live”
Daniel Kaluuya!!

  1. I love reading your Emmy coverage because it reminds of how horribly behind I am when it comes to television. SO MANY big names among those nominees. I do feel like I'm making progress though. Thanks to Star Wars and the MCU, I actually have several nominees and shows that I can say I've watched! LOL

  2. I'm happy for Cobra Kai and WandaVision but I'm baffled by the Don Cheadle nomination as well as I read he is baffled by it. I too am wondering why Carl Lumbly isn't nominated as is Small Axe which I still need to see.

    1. I know! Lumbly was great. They should've went with him, but man they love Cheadle.

  3. When I saw the nominations, especially supporting actor and actress in a drama, I wondered if maybe The Crown and Handmaid's Tale were the only two shows on last year. Surely there were other deserving actors. I also feel like with multiple nominees in the same category, they may cancel each other out unless there is a for sure front runner.

I plan on watching Ted Lasso soon but I am thrilled for the WandaVision nominations! It was so different than anything else on tv at the time and I loved it.

    1. I kind of hate when the Emmys go ham on one show like that, but then I'm a hypocrite because I love that they did it with Ted Lasso.

  4. Count me on Team Ted Lasso! And Team Kathryn Hahn! And go Kaley :) I was crossing my fingers if they got any supporting nods for Flight Attendant it would be Michelle Gomez but otherwise it's a great list overall.

Really hard to predict some of the winners to which I hope will make for a much more fun awards show than usual!

  5. Love the new blog design!! Great job!!

Sooo excited for Yang, Levy and Kaluuya. It's funny how half of the football team is nominated for Ted Lasso but they're worth it. Wasn't crazy about Lovecraft Country but glad to see it wasn't forgotten. Don Cheadle was so underutilized for TFATWS, but his reaction is pretty spot-on. I read most people stopped watching TFATWS during the second episode, but not sure if that's just a rumor, so maybe the voters assumed he had a bigger part. I haven't watched The Crown or Handmaids Tale, so I'm lost with those nominations.

    1. Thank you so much! I can't believe voters couldn't make it through two episodes of TFATWS but made it all through Boys lol.

  6. There isn't a lot of variety here - it's like the Emmys only watched 5 shows. What gives?

    1. And it's not even like they didn't have the time. What else was anyone doing other than watching TV for this past year and a half? lol
