Thursday Movie Picks: Dark Academia

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is Dark Academia. I'm not going to lie, I had to Google that. It's not a subculture of film I've heard mentioned very often. After educating myself quickly, here's what I came up with.

1) Kill Your Darlings -
This movie is a fictional take on the poets of the beat generation. I love it. There are so many wonderful actors in this and If I had my way, I'd be throwing awards at everyone in this left and right.

2) Jane Eyre (2011) -
When I read the description of "Dark Academia" I thought of this first, but I wasn't sure if it exactly qualified. Since Jane is a governess, I decided to go for it.

3) Cracks -
So I hated this movie, but I think it fits. It's about an elite boarding school in the 40's and it wastes the talents of Juno Temple and Eva Green.

  1. I had to look it up too. I hope I'm right with my picks. I haven't seen any of your picks but would like to except the last one.

  2. I thought Kill Your Darlings was more interesting than involving but would ultimately say I enjoyed it. I like the 40's version of Jane Eyre with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles best but this was a decent take on the material. Never heard of Cracks, your reaction to it doesn't fill me with a desire to seek it out and that picture of Eva Green puffing away makes me a little nauseous. I remember years ago when I use to smoke if I dragged on a cigarette like that it would make me queasy!

I must admit I was unfamiliar with dark academia before now. But using the definition I found online I think "School Ties" with Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and every other rising young actor of the time fits. Also the extremely dark "Child's Play" directed by Sidney Lumet and starring James Mason, Robert Preston and Beau Bridges. And then maybe "The Paper Chase" which won John Houseman his Oscar.

    1. Yes, you can skip Cracks lol. Green and Juno Temple both have far better films in their filmography. I haven't seen any of your picks. I saw "Child's Play" and immediately thought of Chucky.

  3. Still haven't seen Kill Your Darlings as that's a film I want to see as I'm a fan of Ginsberg. Jane Eyre is an excellent film as I just love Mia Wasikowska in that one. Cracks is... eh... as it does waste the talent of not just Eva Green and Juno Temple but also Maria Valverde.

I'm already high right now over She-Hulk as the last words of the first episode has me screaming as well as it now has me thinking about writing a porno script. I'm so going to enjoy this show. It's so fun.

    1. Kill Your Darlings is so good! I laughed so hard at that She-Hulk stinger until my 10 year old started asking me what a virgin was lol

    2. Just tell him in 3-4 years. CAPTAIN AMERICA FUCKS!!!!!! I think he lost his V card to either Peter Quill's grandmother/great-grandmother or one of those USO girls he was touring with. He was probably conflicted about it since he was so in love with Peggy (and we know she wasn't a virgin when she first met Steve). Still, I think there was a lot of good times in the bedroom when he chose to return to her.

I think I know why that ship from Sakaar was on Earth. I know people are saying it's all leading up to World War Hulk but... I think it's more about introducing a new character that is going to be part of the Young Avengers.... oh Bruce... you got a lot of explaining to do.

  4. I really like Cracks.
I think Jane Eyre fits because of the gothic elements, her being a teacher and of course she had been in a boarding school.

  6. I also picked Kill Your Darlings, though I haven't seen it yet. Everything I know about the film comes from tumblr posts and I really want to watch it.
