2023 Golden Globe Nominations

The HFPA is back on their bullshit with star-fucking and ignoring female filmmakers. Oh joy! They did manage to get a few things right in my book, so here I am talking about them. Below is a list of the nominations + some quick thoughts.

Best Motion Picture Drama
Avatar: The Way Of The Water
Elvis
The Fabelmans
TÁR
Top Gun: Maverick
I have no idea why Elvis landed here and not in Musical or Comedy. I have a long list of movies I'd stick in here before Avatar. The Woman King, Nope, The Northman just to name a few. But you know, HFPA has a thing about women.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy
Babylon
The Banshees Of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Triangle Of Sadness
I have yet to see Glass Onion or Babylon, but I fully expected both to be here. I'm very happy for the big nominee of the day, The Banshees of Inisherin. I wish they would've made room for The Menu though.

Best Director — Motion Picture
James Cameron, Avatar: The Way Of The Water
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Baz Luhrmann, Elvis
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
This is a James Cameron hate account, so you know my feelings there. WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?!?!?!?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama
Cate Blanchett, TÁR
Olivia Colman, Empire Of Light
Viola Davis, The Woman King
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
Danielle Deadwyler is really not going to get a thing for Till, is she? Unbelievable.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama
Austin Butler, Elvis
Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Hugh Jackman, The Son
Bill Nighy, Living
Jeremy Pope, The Inspection
I've only seen Elvis of these, so I'm a bit lost here, but I most certainly would've nominated John Boyega in Breaking and Felix Kammerer for All Quiet on the Western Front.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Lesley Manville, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris
Margot Robbie, Babylon
Anya Taylor-Joy, The Menu
Emma Thompson, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande
Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once
I'm team Yeoh here but I'm so happy to see Anya! Emma Thompson is a nice surprise too. I liked Leo Grande.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Diego Calva, Babylon
Daniel Craig, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Adam Driver, White Noise
Colin Farrell, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Ralph Fiennes, The Menu
God, I'm so happy Ralph Fiennes was nominated for The Menu. Colin too, but Ralph felt like more of a long shot.

Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture
Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Kerry Condon, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Dolly De Leon, Triangle Of Sadness
Carey Mulligan, She Said
As much as I love Carey Mulligan, I would've subbed her for Stephanie Hsu for Everything Everywhere All At Once. She should not get snubbed for that performance. I'm very happy for Kerry Condon, who felt like a huge long shot. Same for Dolly De Leon.

Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture
Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Brad Pitt, Babylon
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Eddie Redmayne, The Good Nurse
Brendan Gleeson felt like a co-lead to me, but it's close. Paul Dano was supposed to be here for The Fabelmans but I remain unfed. wtf HFPA? Nicholas Hault for The Menu would've been a nice pick here, or Andrew Bennett for The Quiet Girl.

Best Motion Picture – Animated
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Inu-Oh
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
Turning Red
Marcel!!!!!

Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language
All Quiet On The Western Front (Germany)
Argentina, 1985 (Argentina)
Close (Belgium)
Decision To Leave (South Korea)
RRR (India)
I've see AQOTWF which is amazing, RRR which is fun but a mixed bag. I haven't seen the others, but for me The Quiet Girl, Broker, and Saint Omer could've easily gone here. All excellent foreign films.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture
Todd Field, TÁR
Tony Kushner & Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Sarah Polley, Women Talking

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Alexandre Desplat, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Hildur Guðnadóttir, Women Talking
Justin Hurwitz, Babylon
John Williams, The Fabelmans
Carter Burwell, The Banshees Of Inisherin
I selfishly wanted Ludwig here for Black Panther II, but I get it.

Best Original Song, Motion Picture
“Carolina,” Taylor Swift (Where The Crawdads Sing)
“Ciao Papa,” Guillermo del Toro & Roeban Katz (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio)
“Hold My Hand,” Lady Gaga and Bloodpop (Top Gun: Maverick)
“Lift Me Up,” Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
“Naatu Naatu,” Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj (RRR)
Lift Me Up is my favorite, though Naatu Naatu is catchy as hell. I barely remember Gaga's song because everything else in Top Gun: Maverick was just so fun. The first two make me want to die.

Best Television Series – Drama
Better Call Saul
House of the Dragon
The Crown
Ozark
Severance
Glad to see House of the Dragon getting some love!

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Abbott Elementary
The Bear
Hacks
Only Murders in the Building
Wednesday
I'm making this my reminder to finish The Bear. I only watched the first two episodes but I really did enjoy it

Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Black Bird
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Pam And Tommy
The Dropout
The White Lotus: Sicily
I haven't seen Black Bird, but Under The Banner of Heaven and The Staircase were so good, I think one or both should've been here. White Lotus: Sicily wasn't nearly as great as the previous season.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama
Emma D’Arcy, House of the Dragon
Laura Linney, Ozark
Imelda Staunton, The Crown
Hilary Swank, Alaska Daily
Zendaya, Euphoria
What the fuck is Alaska Daily?

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama
Jeff Bridges, The Old Man
Kevin Costner, Yellowstone
Diego Luna, Andor
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Adam Scott, Severance
No Paddy Considine for House of the Dragon is offensive and might honestly be the thing that pisses me off the most aside of them forgetting female directors exist.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary
Kaley Cuoco, The Flight Attendant
Jean Smart, Hacks
Selena Gomez, Only Murders In The Building
Jenna Ortega, Wednesday
So happy for Jenna Ortega!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Donald Glover, Atlanta
Bill Hader, Barry
Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building
Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building
Jeremy Allen White, The Bear

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Jessica Chastain, George and Tammy
Julia Garner, Inventing Anna
Lily James, Pam And Tommy
Julia Roberts, Gaslit
Amanda Seyfried, The Dropout
Garner, James and Seyfried continue their nominations and I'm here for it. Also wtf is Gaslit?

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series
Elizabeth Debicki, The Crown
Hannah Einbinder, Hacks
Julia Garner, Ozark
Janelle James, Abbott Elementary
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Abbott Elementary

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series
John Lithgow, The Old Man
Jonathan Pryce, The Crown
John Turturro, Severance
Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary
Henry Winkler, Barry

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jennifer Coolidge, The White Lotus
Claire Danes, Fleishman Is in Trouble
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Under The Banner Of Heaven
Niecy Nash-Betts, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Aubrey Plaza, The White Lotus
Meghann Fahy gave a much more memorable performance in White Lotus than Coolidge, but we are in her resurgence so I'm not shocked they nominated her. I'm happy for Daisy Edgar-Jones, who has been very underappreciated for the work she put in Under The Banner of Heaven.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Taron Egerton, Black Bird
Colin Firth, The Staircase
Andrew Garfield, Under The Banner Of Heaven
Evan Peters, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Sebastian Stan, Pam And Tommy
Aside from not knowing what Black Bird is, I really like all these nominations. Great performances.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
F. Murray Abraham, The White Lotus
Domhnall Gleeson, The Patient
Paul Walter Hauser, Black Bird
Richard Jenkins, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Seth Rogen, Pam And Tommy
The Patient was a bit of a mixed bag BUT Domhnall was excellent and now he and his dad get to be nominated together! That's so sweet.

Comments

  1. These awards are lame. I stopped taking the Golden Globes seriously a long time ago as I know Brendan Fraser will not show up. Fuck the HFPA. They're a bunch of hateful scumbags who don't know shit about anything. I for once would like to see someone crash the whole festivities and then just grab all of the envelopes and throw the trophies at the winners yelling "IT'S YOURS!" Yet, there are moments that are fun whenever Taylor Swift becomes a target when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made fun of her by making sure she doesn't date Michael J. Fox's son and writing a song about him. The look on her face was fucking hilarious as it would be the same face she had when Adele won for "Skyfall".

BTW, who do you want to see in the World Cup Finals? I kind of want to see Argentina vs. Morocco. I'm rooting for Morocco to go all the way though I want Messi to have his World Cup victory and rub it in the face of that whiny crybaby little bitch Ronaldo who was never a GOAT and never will be.

    1. I'm so torn, Mbappe on France is one of my favorite players, but I would love if an African team made it to the finale. My kid loves Messi, so he's easy to root for too.

  2. I haven’t seen any although I want to see..so many of these but couldn’t care less about Avatar. I already know the special effects will be excellent but the story etc will be simplistic and...who cares. I always liked the Golden Globes( not talking about Dolly Parton here..nyuck, nyuck) so I’m glad they are back.
