Indie Gems: Laurence Anyways

"I can't live like this."

There's a scene early on in Laurence Anyways where our title character (played by Melvil Poupad) finally goes to work dressed as a woman for the first time. He stands in front of the class he's teaching, it's silent. He struggles for words, waits for his students to laugh. One finally raises her hand to ask a question, and it has to do with the current assignment. No one gives him any grief.

Words can't describe how much I loved that scene. Laurence was born a man, but is meant to be a woman. He has been in a long term relationship with Fred (Suzanne Clement) and still wants to continue being with her. The film follows them for over a decade examining their love, and the hardships that follow with Laurence's transition.

Director Xavier Dolan continues to impress. This film was shot beautifully. It got a little on the long side, but none of the scenes were wasted. I had the same reaction to this as I did Blue is the Warmest Color. It's very long, but I don't know what I'd actually cut out if I was given the option to do so.

Then there's our two leads who gave Oscar-worthy performances. I was blown away by them. They were perfect. This movie balances its heavy and light hearted scenes well, and I can't wait to see more of Dolan's work. This film is currently on Netflix Instant.

Grade: A

Memorable Quote - "I don't want to come back to Earth. I don't give a fuck." - Laurence Alia (Melvil Poupad)

    1. I'd start with I Killed My Mother, because that was his first, and he was a teenager when he made it. It's really crazy to think that, because it's so good.

  3. Woo hoo! This just missed my top 10 last year, and I nominate it for Best Director and Best Actress. Dolan even wins a CinSpec for designing the costumes. :)
