Indie Gems: Touchy Feely

Well this is strange..

One morning, a normally happy massage therapist, Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt) wakes up and realizes she's now disgusted by the human touch. She can't touch her clients, she can't touch her boyfriend. She spends hours staring at skin trying to get out of this funk. At the same time, her normally uptight brother, Paul's (Josh Pais) dentistry business that was one foot out the door now flourishes after patients claim he cured their TMJ by just touching them.

Lynn Shelton is becoming one of my favorite female directors. I loved Your Sister's Sister and Touchy Feely, while more bleak, as a similar feel. The story feels very original and the cast is great. Ellen page, Scoot McNairy, Allison Janney and Ron Livingston make up the supporting roles. Josh Pais was my favorite in this. He was so restrained as Paul. You could almost feel how uncomfortable he was. If you touched him, he'd probably flinch away. But the look on his face would be begging for contact.

I need to check out Hump Day, another of Shelton's films. She also has Laggies in theaters now.

Grade: B

Memorable Quote: "...take off your shirt." - Abby (Rosemarie DeWitt)

  1. I like Rosemarie DeWitt but umm, this one doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm a bit more inclined to check out Laggies as I like Sam Rockwell.
