Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: TV Shows Based on Movies

This week's TV theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is all about those movies that were so popular they spawned TV shows. There's an alarming amount of animated options that fit this week, which is where I decided to take this theme.

1) Aladdin
Did you know there was an Aladdin TV series that came out a few years after the movie? I did. I used to watch it. It was goofy and took place after The Return of Jafar, and that's about all I remember from it.

2) How To Train Your Dragon: Race To The Edge
The popular film franchise also spawned a Netflix show that had 6 seasons. I'm not sure I saw all of this, but I'd watch occasionally with my son and while the animation wasn't the sharpest and it didn't have the music the movies did, it was still a pretty decent companion piece for the films that let you get to know the characters a bit better.

3) The Lion Guard
I had to talk about this show because I rejoiced when my son grew out of it. It's The Lion King, only Simba also has a son named Kion as well as Kiara, who already had her own movie in The Lion King 2. This show is remarkably stupid and it's almost amusing watching them try to tell this story and acknowledge the existing canon. The most egregious thing is Rob uber douche Lowe voices Simba.

    I guess it shows that I don't have kids because I didn't know any of these existed haha.

    I think I was vaguely aware that these existed but you know me and animation...I haven't seen a one. Good theme within the theme through.

    SO many choices this time out. I went with two I've loved for years and a third choice I liked but not as passionately.

    M*A*S*H* (1972-1983)-During the Korean conflict surgeon Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce (Alan Alda) and head nurse Margaret “Hot Lips” Holihan (Loretta Swit) diligently work to save lives and their sanity with grit and humor as colleagues both friend-surgeons “Trapper John” McIntire (Wayne Rogers) & BJ Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell) and foe-Frank Burns (Larry Linville) & Charles Winchester (David Ogden Stiers)- and many others pass through. Based on the 1970 Altman film this serio-comic series ran for 12 exemplary years.

    The Odd Couple (1970-1975)-Separated from their wives neat freak Felix Unger (Tony Randall) and slovenly Oscar Madison (Jack Klugman) share a New York apartment. Though the habits of each drive the other to distraction their deep abiding friendship makes them stick together. Randall & Klugman share the kind of chemistry you just can’t manufacture. Based on the Neil Simon film of the same name that starred Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.

    Alice (1976-1985)-Recently widowed Alice Hyatt (Linda Lavin) heads off with her young son Tommy for a fresh start as an aspiring singer. She gets as far as Phoenix where she finds a job at Mel’s, a roadside diner. With a boisterous group of co-workers including blunt and sassy waitress Flo (Polly Holliday) she tries to pursue her dream while dealing with everyday misadventures. Based on Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”.

    I do remember there was a TV series based on Aladdin. I forgot about it. It was alright. I haven't seen the other 2 picks but I keep forgetting about the fact that How to Train Your Dragon became a TV series.

      And one that went on for so long too. Most of the original voice actors stayed on too, which was nice.

    Jeez...where the heel am I...I thought I commented here..I blame menopause which really sucks. I have only seen the movie “The Lion King” but never the tv show and I still have to see Aladdin and I love Robin Williams

    I haven't seen any of these but then again, I don't watch animations as shows.. movies, yes but shows, nope. Haven't even heard of these.

Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) has quietly been trying to make a difference as The Batman in Gotham. He can't be everywhere. He works closely with Lt Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and they face a puzzling crime by a masked murderer going by The Riddler. (Paul Dano) As the stakes get higher, they realize just how deep corruption runs in Gotham.  The Batman is first and foremost a detective story. Director Matt Reeves obviously took inspiration from films like Se7en and Zodiac when he crafted this story. S e7en is one of my all time favorite films, so that worked well for me. I loved seeing Batman and Gordon work as a team. Same with Batman and Selina. (Zoe Kravitz) They ooze chemistry. As much as I love the Nolan trilogy, Christian Bale only really had good chemistry with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Thursday Movie Picks: Wedding Movies

How fitting that Wandering Through The Shelves has us start the month of June with movies about weddings. June brides are a thing, right? At least that's what people kept telling me when I got married in June. I just picked it because it was warm. To be honest, I don't like many wedding movies, so this was kind of tough, but here's a few I can tolerate. 1) Wedding Crashers This is one of my favorite comedies until the last 20 minutes or so when it falls flat on its face. But it's so hilarious and quotable before all of that, I can forgive it. Lock it up. 2) Rachel Getting Married I used this one for a pick last year but it's easily my favorite movie involving a wedding. The acting is fantastic. I 3) Corpse Bride Truth be told, I wasn't crazy about Corpse Bride, but like I said. Slim pickings in the wedding movie world for me. I'd watch this over a "classic" like My Best Friend's Wedding or Runaway Bride any day.  click th

Random Ramblings: The Radio Flyer Conundrum

Recently, I was talking to someone about who I thought were the best child actors when I was also a child.  Two that really stood out to me were Elijah Wood and Joseph Mazello, and one film those two were in together was called Radio Flyer.  Then I was reminded about the uniqueness of this film. Instead of reviewing the film, I wanted to have an open discussion about the ending. It deals with a tough issue; child abuse. What I’ve noticed is the way that the film ends is interpreted many different ways, and the filmmakers never came forward to say what was right and wrong. I’m interested in hearing everyone’s opinions on it. How did you interpret the ending? Obviously spoiler alerts will follow..
