Thursday Movie Picks: 2020 Releases

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is looking back at the 2020 releases...that are still technically coming out because of the Oscar submissions but I digress. I wanted to talk about some 2020 releases that I enjoyed that I feel like no one talks about anymore

1) Horse Girl
- The script admittedly isn't perfect but Allison Brie gives a great performance. This was one of the better Netflix releases of 2020, in my opinion.

2) Disclosure -
This documentary about trans representation in media was so interesting. Docs are rarely widely discussed and in 2020 especially I felt like I was only hearing about docuseries on TV vs features, but it still surprises me that this one isn't brought up more.

3) Bad Education
- Hugh Jackman was going to win an Emmy for this until Mark Ruffalo came out swinging with I Know This Much is True. This was such a great movie.

  3. I haven't seen any of these. The Hugh Jackman one is the one I'll try and seek out.

With the lockdown and all I know I saw a great many films last year but didn't realize until I went to pull this together how few of them came from 2020. I had a perfect for these purposes three!

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears-Fabulously wealthy and endlessly chic 20’s Aussie detective and adventuress Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) globetrots to unravel an ancient curse involving priceless emeralds aided by stalwart and smitten Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page). Big screen continuation of the highly entertaining Phryne Fisher Mysteries TV series from Australia.

Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind-Through interviews with family (including her two daughters) and friends the life and tragic mysterious death of megastar Natalie Wood is examined.

The Invisible Man-Cecilia (Elizabeth Moss) attempts to escape from the virtual imprisonment of her marriage to an ultra-wealthy, brilliant and psychotic husband Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). While trying to rebuild her life she discovers he has devised a way to mask himself to the point of invisibility as he terrorizes her. Okay thriller sustains its suspense until an ending that betrays both of its main characters.

    1. I haven't seen Miss Fisher, but I've seen your other two. I liked The Invisible Man, and the Natalie Wood doc was pretty good but it really turned into a weird "my daddy would NEVER" thing towards the end that I found kind of awkward.

  4. Nice picks! I've wanted to watch Horse Girl, but I'm kind of disappointed in how Alison's been typecast a lot lately as like the uptight insensitive chick. I might check it out. Need to check out Disclosure too.

  7. I immediately checked out Horse Girl on IMDb as somehow I missed that one, had no idea what it was about but it sounds intriguing! Bad Education is on my Honorable Mention of 2020, definitely an underrated film and one of Hugh Jackman's best.

  8. I have Bad Education in my never-ending DVR list as it's been on HBO recently though it's really a 2019 film since it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival that year.
