Thursday Movie Picks - 2021 Releases

It's another year of Thursday Movie Picks over at Wandering Through The Shelves! As of me writing this, Wanderer only has a preliminary schedule out for 2022, but I'm sure by the time I actually post this it will be final. Either way, check out her blog and join the fun. Today's theme is 2021 releases, and I'm going with my top 3 favorite films of the year.

1) The Power of the Dog -
Benedict Cumberbatch is so good in this movie that I can barely wrap my head around it. On top of that, it has great performances by my girl Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McGee and Jessie Plemmons, and is beautifully directed by Jane Campion. Please give this all the Oscars

2) Dune -
I went into Dune having not read the books nor seen the earlier film, and I was just hoping I'd like it. I came out loving it. I can't wait for part two, I can't wait for this to be back on HBO max so I can watch it again. It's amazing.

3) Nine Days -
This is easily the most underrated film of the year. Winston Duke plays a man who interviews souls hoping for a chance to be born. It's beautiful, and poignant, and I cried and cried. Please watch this if you haven't yet.

  1. Yikes, I'm 0 for 3 on your list and they all sound incredible. I had no idea that Dunst and Plemmons were in the Power of the Dog, so I'm so effing in on that one...maybe even tonight??? I'm trying to write shorter reviews so I can keep up (and thank you for still coming by....even with Turkey Baster dude being the level of movie I'm currently down with)

    1. omg WATCH Power of the Dog. It's right there on Netflix!

I think I'm going to change up my review structure as well. Not that more than 10 people read my blog, but just for something different.

  2. I really want to see the first one because I have heard the raves plus I like Benedict. I have not heard of nine days but it sounds really good and original. I have no idea why but I have no real desire to see Dune. I hear great things but I just can’t get my head into it.

    1. Power of the Dog and Nine Days are so good. Since Power is on Netflix I've gotten to re-watch it. I hope Nine Days ends up on streaming somewhere too so I can see it again.

  3. I haven't seen any of these though I've heard of Dune but will continue to avoid that.

I was unfortunate enough to see the first one and it was just so dreadful it killed any desire to see this. I'm not the biggest sci-fi guy anyway, we went because my brother-in-law at the time had loved the book and was very anxious to see it but even he thought it was trash.

I had pretty much decided last year that come the new year I was going to stop participating on Thursdays other than stopping in and commenting on your blog, Birgit's and a few others and after looking over the upcoming themes that's the way I'm going.

    1. Aww I'm bummed you won't be participating but I'm glad you're still stopping by because I always love reading your thoughts.

Don't let old Dune scare you off from this one. I think it's great.

  4. I've only seen Dune of these. I adore the source material--I'll be fascinated to hear your take on the next installment.

And then, you should absolutely read the book.

  5. So far, I've seen 2 of the 3 films on your list with Nine Days on my watchlist. The Power of the Dog is in my top 5 of 2021 right now as I'm half-finished with my review.

  9. I didn't love The Power of the Dog as much as I wanted to but oh man, Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing.
I was new to Dune too! None of the trailers sold it to me but I'm so invested in it now, can't wait for Part 2 :)
