Review: The Gray Man

The Universe did not want me at the theaters seeing Nope this weekend, so here I am reviewing generic Netflix action movies. Thankfully this time, said generic Netflix action movie stars three incredibly beautiful people in the form of Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, and Ana de Armas

Six (Gosling) is pulled from prison to participate in the Sierra program, a group the CIA calls to take out targets when they can't do it themselves. When he comes across some compromising information against the new head of the department, he goes on the run and a contracted killer Lloyd (Evans) is sent after him.

This is very by books script rise. It's directed by the Russo Brothers who are enjoying apparently not having Kevin Feige lording over them way too much because their camera work here is a damn mess just like it was with Cherry. This movie definitely belongs on Netflix. It's not a theater see.

Gosling and Evans are occasionally funny and always convincing in their roles, so they make this not awful. Ana doesn't get a lot to do. The one who really gets screwed over is Jessica Henwick. She gets stuck wearing one of the worst wigs I've ever seen and has the most convoluted mini arc of the film. It's obnoxious.

So is this for you? Are you commuting a long distance or bored at home? Then this will surely help you pass 2 hours.

Grade: C

  1. HaHaHa. I gotta admit I liked this one. Watched it a second time with the family and they were a hoot. At the same time, it is pretty by-the-books. It's a story that's been told how many times? 100?

    1. At LEAST 100. It's one of the better generic action flights, at least.

  2. I was hoping to see Nope yesterday but I have family friends coming over for a week as they're set to move to Philadelphia to be with their daughter who is going to have a baby coming. I'm not sure about seeing this as there's just other films that I want to see as MUBI has become the streaming service I've fallen in love with.

BTW, in light of the recent news relating to Comic-Con and the MCU. What do you think of the slate of new films coming? I was hoping for a Scarlet Witch solo film coming as I think Wanda deserves a film in which she becomes a recluse only to be pulled back in by an evil force that wants to destroy her as she gets help from Vision, Billy, and Tommy. I hope she at least gets her happy ending. I also am waiting for a series for Lady Sif. She deserves her own thing after being really underused in Love & Thunder.

    1. Family issues got in the way of me going to Nope too unfortunately. Hopefully I can get to it this week. I know a lot of people were convinced there would be a solo Scarlet Witch film, but I wasn't. I knew they wouldn't after how MoM treated her. I just hope she shows up in one of these properties. I'm guessing we'll have to wait until Agatha's show. I'm not really that excited about phase 5 right now, but if Ant-Man and Secret Wars start off with a bang, I think my excitement will increase. I am really looking forward to The marvels, Captain America and Daredevil. Cautiously optimistic for Blade.

  3. This sounds like a fun flick to watch and not think. Why can't this guy go and place a blow dart into Trump and Putin? I can only wish...I know that's cruel. I find that Disney seems to be the whole of the film industry. They have a huge lineup of Marvel movies...ughh.

  4. You're so right, this is the kind of movie only worth watching if you're bored or you want some distraction while you're ironing or something. Can't believe it cost $200mil to make this, ugh!

  5. I couldn't even get to the finish line on this one. Turned it off. I had heard rumblings about the Russos not getting this one right and I was admittedly wary of it before I even started to watch. Lots of money spent. Not a lot to show for it.

    1. Oh yeah, I wasn't expecting 5 star cinema with this either, but seeing Gosling and Evans share the screen was at least worth it.
