Review: Black Adam

5,000 years ago, Teth Adam (Dwayne Johnson) was given the power of the Gods, then immediately sealed away. Now he is awakened and doesn't recognize the city that once was his home. His way of "justice" directly opposes that of the Justice Society, which is sent to deal with him.

A few years ago, I was pretty excited about the prospect of Black Adam. I thought The Rock (once a wrestling fan, always a wrestling fan. It's still weird calling him "Dwayne" was going to be great and I usually love my morally grey super heroes. Aside from some cool characters, Black Adam is a step back in the DCEU.

This film feels like Snyder's DCEU, not the DCEU that has been slowly trying to recover itself from his direction. Back is the over use of slow motion and scenes that would better fit in a music video. The majority of the dialogue is exposition, giving no one a chance to show off their acting chops. The majority of the performances are painfully stilted.

Funny enough, Hawkman, played by Aldis Hodge is a character that has never interested me, and here he was my favorite. Hodge gets to use some range here. Pierce Brosnan is also very good as Dr. Fate, but he doesn't get to do a ton.

The after credit scene will definitely excite some. I'm not going to give up on Black Adam, but I really hope whoever brings him to the screen next does the exact opposite of what this film does.

Grade: C

  1. I've tried really hard to be excited about this film and I find that I...just can't work up any enthusiasm for it. I'll probably see it eventually, but I don't really know if I will or that I will care that much.

    1. That's how I've been with a few super hero films as of late. I didn't even see Morbius until it came out on DVD.

    2. I still haven't bothered with Morbius. I've had plenty of opportunities, but I just don't want to subject myself to it. (Werewolf by Night, though, was great.)

    3. I still need to watch Werewolf by Night! Definitely doing that sometime this week.

  2. I'll wait for it on HBO Max or something. The Crock is a gullible bitch who refuses to take risks as an actor for easy money. I really hope the Tribal Chief beats him up and ACKNOWLEDGES HIM DAMMIT!!!!!! I acknowledge Roman Reigns as THE TRIBAL CHIEF since he made Sami Zayn a honorary Uce! Sami is a joy to watch mainly to see how hard he can make everyone else around him corpse.... SEND FOR THE MAN!!!!!!!

    1. lmao I can't even imagine The Rock trying to do a small dramatic indy movie at this point. It would be so strange.

    2. I think it's because of Southland Tales which is why he won't do films like it. He was actually alright in that film along with Seann William Scott. In fact, they were the only people in that film worth watching as well... everything and everyone in that film was just... bottom of the barrel, port-a-potty shit. It's so fucking awful.

    3. I forgot about Southland Tales! I remember when IMDb had message boards, I was really looking forward to it based on the cast and premise, then it came out and everyone said it was awful. I never watched it.

    4. Don't. It is horrible. I do remember that Trent Reznor was going to do the score with Moby but... he ended up not doing it to focus on making With Teeth instead. He made the right choice. Him and Moby were never going to work because Moby is a twat.

  3. I want to like it but there is something lacking even in the trailers...a sense of care. I just don't care about these characters.
