2023 Golden Globe Predictions

The Golden Globes are this Tuesday and....yeah, I forgot to post my predictions last week. I'm used to the Sunday schedule. Here's who I think will win, and in some cases, who should win.

Best Motion Picture Drama
Avatar: The Way Of The Water
Elvis
The Fabelmans
TÁR
Top Gun: Maverick
Who will win: TAR
Who should Win: Top Gun: Maverick
I'm a bit torn on this because on one hand, the Globes love stars and Top Gun: Maverick IS the best film on this list, but Tar has just been killing it in various critic circles and you have Martin Scorsese out there saying it's saving cinema. I'm not going to underestimate it.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy
Babylon
The Banshees Of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Triangle Of Sadness
Who will win: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Who should win: The Banshees of Inisherin
EEAAO is a great film and feels like a front runner, but I just prefer Banshees personally.

Best Director — Motion Picture
James Cameron, Avatar: The Way Of The Water
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Baz Luhrmann, Elvis
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Who will and should win: The Daniels

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama
Cate Blanchett, TÁR
Olivia Colman, Empire Of Light
Viola Davis, The Woman King
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
Who will and should win: Cate Blanchett
Her biggest hurdle is Michelle Yeoh and they're not up against each other here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama
Austin Butler, Elvis
Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Hugh Jackman, The Son
Bill Nighy, Living
Jeremy Pope, The Inspection
Who will win: Austin Butler
Who should win: Brendan Fraser
Fraser has talked a lot of shit about the Globes (which they deserve) so I'd be surprised if he actually wins it. Butler has practically turned into Elvis because of this role so I see him taking it.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Lesley Manville, Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris
Margot Robbie, Babylon
Anya Taylor-Joy, The Menu
Emma Thompson, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande
Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Who will and should win: Michelle Yeoh

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy
Diego Calva, Babylon
Daniel Craig, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Adam Driver, White Noise
Colin Farrell, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Ralph Fiennes, The Menu
Who will and should win: Colin Farrell
I love all of these performances (even though White Noise is an awful movie) but Colin is my faorite here.

Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture
Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Kerry Condon, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Dolly De Leon, Triangle Of Sadness
Carey Mulligan, She Said
Who will win: Jamie Lee Curtis
Who should win: Angela Bassett
I think Jamie has the slight edge, but I would be happy if she, Angela, Kerry or Dolly won. I love Carey, but she didn't stick out for me as much as the others.

Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture
Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Brad Pitt, Babylon
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Eddie Redmayne, The Good Nurse
Who will win: Ke Huy Quan
Who should win: Brendan Gleeson
Ke Huy Quan is the front runner this season and I liked him, but didn't *love* his performance. The ones from Banshees again just worked better for me.

Best Motion Picture – Animated
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Inu-Oh
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
Turning Red
Who will win: Pinocchio
Who should win: Marcel The Shell With Shoes On

Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language
All Quiet On The Western Front (Germany)
Argentina, 1985 (Argentina)
Close (Belgium)
Decision To Leave (South Korea)
RRR (India)
Who will and should win: All Quiet on the Western Front
RRR and Decision To Leave might be up there too, but for me Germany's film is just the overall best here.

Best Screenplay – Motion Picture

Todd Field, TÁR
Tony Kushner & Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All At Once
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Sarah Polley, Women Talking
Who will and should win: Everything Everywhere All At Once

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Alexandre Desplat, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Hildur Guðnadóttir, Women Talking
Justin Hurwitz, Babylon
John Williams, The Fabelmans
Carter Burwell, The Banshees Of Inisherin
Who will win win: Pinocchio
Who should win: Babylon
I'm torn here, honestly. Babylon's score is the most memorable from this list, but I'm not sure if it's going to win anything.

Best Original Song, Motion Picture
“Carolina,” Taylor Swift (Where The Crawdads Sing)
“Ciao Papa,” Guillermo del Toro & Roeban Katz (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio)
“Hold My Hand,” Lady Gaga and Bloodpop (Top Gun: Maverick)
“Lift Me Up,” Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)
“Naatu Naatu,” Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, Rahul Sipligunj (RRR)
Who will and should win: Lift Me Up

Best Television Series – Drama
Better Call Saul
House of the Dragon
The Crown
Ozark
Severance
Who will and should win: House of the Dragon
I always go with the Freshman picks when it comes to the Globes. Severance is very popular, but I feel like HotD will get a win.

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Abbott Elementary
The Bear
Hacks
Only Murders in the Building
Wednesday
Who will and should win: Abbott Elementary

Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Black Bird
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Pam And Tommy
The Dropout
The White Lotus: Sicily
Who will win: The White Lotus
Who should win: The Dropout or Pam and Tommy
This is one of those where The White Lotus' popularity will probably help it even though the other two shows are better.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama
Emma D’Arcy, House of the Dragon
Laura Linney, Ozark
Imelda Staunton, The Crown
Hilary Swank, Alaska Daily
Zendaya, Euphoria
Who will and should win: Zendaya
Part of me wants to go with Emma but I think Zendaya repeats her Emmy win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama
Jeff Bridges, The Old Man
Kevin Costner, Yellowstone
Diego Luna, Andor
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Adam Scott, Severance
Who will win: Adam Scott
Who should win: Bob Odenkirk
Costner could also win because of his star power but with the amount of people that love Severance...I think Scott might take it. I just with Odenkirk would win SOMETHING for Better Call Saul.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary
Kaley Cuoco, The Flight Attendant
Jean Smart, Hacks
Selena Gomez, Only Murders In The Building
Jenna Ortega, Wednesday
Who will and should win: Quinta Brunson

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy
Donald Glover, Atlanta
Bill Hader, Barry
Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building
Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building
Jeremy Allen White, The Bear
Who will and should win: Jeremy Allen White
I really liked White's performance in The Bear. Martin and Short will split votes, Glover is a previous winner and Hader gave a great dramatic performance in Barry's final season, but not so much a comedic one. I think this is White's to take.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Jessica Chastain, George and Tammy
Julia Garner, Inventing Anna
Lily James, Pam And Tommy
Julia Roberts, Gaslit
Amanda Seyfried, The Dropout
Who will win: Amanda Seyfried
Who should win: Amanda, Lily or Julia
I think Amanda repeats her Emmy win, but I'd be happy for her, Lily or Julia. I think they were all wonderful in their shows.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series
Elizabeth Debicki, The Crown
Hannah Einbinder, Hacks
Julia Garner, Ozark
Janelle James, Abbott Elementary
Sheryl Lee Ralph, Abbott Elementary
Who will and should win: Sheryl Lee Ralph

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Musical-Comedy or Drama Television Series
John Lithgow, The Old Man
Jonathan Pryce, The Crown
John Turturro, Severance
Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary
Henry Winkler, Barry
Who will win: Henry Winkler
Who should win: ?
I don't see Abbott sweeping their categories, so that's why I didn't guess Tyler here. I didn't finish The Crown and didn't watch Seerance or The Old Man so I'm just throwing Winkler out there.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jennifer Coolidge, The White Lotus
Claire Danes, Fleishman Is in Trouble
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Under The Banner Of Heaven
Niecy Nash-Betts, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Aubrey Plaza, The White Lotus
Who will win: Jennifer Coolidge
Who should win: Daisy Edgar-Jones
Coolidge has had an entire career resurgence from this role and her "these gays are trying to kill me" are going to solidify her in meme culture. She's winning. I'm just over here begging you to watch Under the Banner of Heaven because the acting in that show was top notch.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Taron Egerton, Black Bird
Colin Firth, The Staircase
Andrew Garfield, Under The Banner Of Heaven
Evan Peters, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Sebastian Stan, Pam And Tommy
Who will win: Evan Peters
Who should win: Andrew Garfield
Again, I loved UTBOH. Evan was SO creepy in this show that he probably should win something for it. That dude is never getting laid again.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
F. Murray Abraham, The White Lotus
Domhnall Gleeson, The Patient
Paul Walter Hauser, Black Bird
Richard Jenkins, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
Seth Rogen, Pam And Tommy
Who will win: F. Murrah Abraham
Who should win: Domhnall Gleeson
The Patient wasn't perfect, but Gleeson certainly was. I'm a little torn on who's winning this one honestly. I think Jenks and Rogen could as well.

Comments

  1. I don't think I will watch this as I don't really care for it though I always glee over that time Adele won for Skyfall and the bitchy look that Taylor Swift had towards Adele. Wow... what a loser.

  2. I'm glad this is back and, hopefully, cleaned up by cleaning house. I haven't seen much of anything but I think John Williams will win because this is his sqan song and he is 90. I so want to see the Banshees. I love Michelle Yeoh who was, to me, the first Bond Girl that could kick ass and she js a black belt so it works. I have to see that film. Sounds like something from Star Trek

    1. That's true, I probably shouldn't count out Williams but this score just wasn't as memorable for me.
