TV Movie Review: The Girl

He made her a star.

I saw this the night it premiered, and this review has been sitting in my drafts since then. Whoops.

The Girl in question is Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller) and it follows her as she becomes Alfred Hitchcock's (Toby Jones) new star in 'The Birds.' The film chronicles Hitch's strange obsession with Tippi, and the hell he put her through while filming. All of this seemingly happened while his wife, Alma (Imelda Stauton) idly stood by.

To be perfectly honest, while I appreciate Hitchcock's work, his back story is one that I'm not all too familiar with. Did he pursue Tippi and abuse her during filming? Probably. Who knows? The Girl certainly does Hitchcock no favors and Jones plays him as an absolute creep. Sienna Miller plays Tippi as a woman who knows she's in too deep to just walk away, yet she holds her head up high on her last day of shooting Marnie.

Hitch gossip aside, I thought the actors were all really great here. HBO has a way of making a TV movie feel like anything but. I'm not sure if this is one that the Emmys will jump all over next year. Only time will tell.

  3. I haven't seen The Birds yet but this movie intrigues me. I might check it out if it's available on iTunes or Netflix Streaming (probably never on the latter, heh).

  4. I thought the movie was all right, but I'd probably give it a C. It was great to see how those two great movies were made and Miller was wonderful, but the film felt a bit rushed, the script wasn't as strong as it could be.

  5. Good review here, one I completely agree with. I studied old Hitch in college and yeah, he definitely tormented poor Tippi to no end. But did he pursue her as a sexual deviant? No, at least not that I ever heard. I frankly had no idea where that plot arc came from. Ha, oh well.
