Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Dystopian/Apocalyptic

Happy Awkward Family Dinner Day, my American friends! I hope everyone behaves themselves today. If you're here reading instead - this week's theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is about those TV series that take place after the world has gone to shit. I already used most of the shows that came to mind first for this theme so this is what I have left over. I had to cheat a little.

1) Fear The Walking Dead

This show started off by showing civilization during the outbreak and had fairly interesting characters. Then TWD poison Scott Gimple got involved, the best characters are dead and now the show is basically The Walking Dead in a different location.

2) The Last Man On Earth

I haven't seen the entire series in full but it was an amusing take on a small group of people after a virus wipes out most of the humans on Earth.

3) Watchmen

So this isn't technically dystopian but it's an alternate version of our reality and things are pretty rough. That counts, right?

  1. While I've heard of all three of these I haven't seen a single one! I did see the Watchmen movie and hated it so I doubt the show would work for me. I also saw the Vincent Price Last Man on Earth though I'm not sure it and the series are telling the same story though it sounds similar.

This isn't a favored genre for me so I really had to peck around to come up with my three.

Terra Nova (2011)-In 2149 when the planet is dying Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara) and his family are transported back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth where they join Terra Nova, a colony of humans with a second chance to build a civilization. Imperfect but with some interesting set pieces.

Planet Earth (1974)-Dylan Hunt (John Saxon) awakens from suspended animation and finds himself in the 23rd century where women rule the world and men are slaves called Dinks. He is captured and sold as a slave, but escapes and joins a male rebel movement. The short-lived series portrayed the struggle between the two factions for dominance.

The Planet of the Apes (1974)-Another short term series this one derived from the megahit Charlton Heston original film. Two astronauts (James Naughton and Ron Harper) cross through a time warp and crash on an Earth now ruled by apes and struggle week after week to elude capture and attempt to return home. Despite a game cast what worked in the theatre didn’t always on a weekly basis. Several of the performers from the film, including Roddy McDowell and Mark Lenard, returned for this.

    1. I didn't realize POTA had a TV series. I loved the new movies, the last one especially has been a favorite of mine. I'm familiar with your other two but I never watched them.

The Watchmen TV series is so much better than the movie. It's nothing like I expected it to be, you should check it out.

  2. I haven't seen the new Watchmen show yet, but it looks interesting! I still need to watch the Walking Dead though.

    1. Skip The Walking Dead and head straight for Watchmen lol

  3. I can't say your selection of "Watchmen" doesn't count, considering I went with three selections that create a dystopia for me, but not for a lot of people. ;-)

  4. I still haven't seen Watchmen as I've been too tired to kind of watch anything these days. I really want to see this. Especially with the music by Trent & Atticus of NIN.

    1. The music is great, I think you'd really appreciate how it's shot too. It's gorgeous.

  5. I really enjoyed the first season of Fear the Walking Dead but then it went downhill

  6. I'm almost caught up with Watchmen. Laurie Blake episode was my favorite so far

  7. Totally agree about Fear The Walking Dead. Honestly, Tom Riddle was the most compelling part in the first few seasons, but I'm glad he got out before it was too late.

    1. He was. I don't blame him for wanting to jump ship when Gimple came on board.

  8. Yup...I haven’t seen any of these but I know of them. I just have no desire to watch them. I normally can write things up and look at my blog at work but we have this big changeover and I now need to get my own personal chrome. You think I should remember passwords but I suck at it. I have been locked out since Wednesday.

    1. Oh no that's awful. I hope you get it sorted out. That would drive me insane.

  9. This reminds me, I still need to watch Watchmen.

  10. I've only seen the first season of Fear The Walking Dead and it was not as impressive as the first season of the Walking Dead so I dropped it. Plus it looked like it was going to be as manipulative with its cliffhangers as TWD and I wasn't going through that again.

    1. I don't blame you. I finally dropped TWD two seasons ago after they killed Carl.
