Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Mystery (Girl Week)

Happy Thanksgiving, American friends! I hope you're celebrating with friends or tolerable family today. This week's TV edition from Wandering Through The Shelves is one of my favorite genres...mysteries! And because it's also Girl Week over at Dell's blog, I'm picking three shows with female leads.

1) Mare of Easttown -
In a world of binge watching, HBO dropped Mare of Easttown this year and it seemed like everyone was watching it together on Sundays and talking about it the next day. This was a great series filled with wonderful performances.

2) Nine Perfect Strangers -
This show overall is pretty weird, but I cannot stress enough how great Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Canavalle are together in this. They were the absolute highlights. (along with Manny Jancinto's bare ass)

3) The Undoing -
This was from last year but Nicole Kidman's hair and green coat in this lives rent free in my mind.

  1. Oh I loved Mare, I think I mentioned I live in Delco so a lot of it struck a cord-although the much vaunted accents were variably accurate. Kate Winslet was wonderfully tough and scrappy.

I'd love to see Nine Perfect Strangers, love both of those performers and it sound intriguing but Kidman (NOT a fan outside of The Others) will keep me from the last.

My three are also Girl Week inspired! Here we go:

Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries (2012-2015)-Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) is a modern young woman of means who sets herself up as a private investigator for cases that catch her fancy in 1920’s Melbourne, Australia. With her faithful companion Dot (Ashleigh Cummings) by her side and cloaked in one drop dead outfit after another Miss Fisher manages to suss out the villain time and again, sometimes with the help of Detective Jack Robinson (with whom she shares an unrequited flirtation as does his deputy Hugh with the fair Dot) and sometimes by butting heads with him. Fantastic series loaded with wit and style and the always assured heroine taking charge in a time when women were far less able to.

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries (1998)-Famed, somewhat notorious criminologist and author Mrs. Adela Bradley (the late, great Diana Rigg) with her loyal chauffeur George (Neil Dudgeon) at the helm of her Rolls Royce tosses off bon mots to the camera as they find intrigue and murder wherever they journey in 1920’s England. Like Miss Fisher Mrs. Bradley is a fashion plate albeit sporting a more mature but no less stylish look.

Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996)-Retired schoolteacher Mrs. Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury) writes a mystery novel as a form of therapy after the recent death of her husband Frank. Unbeknownst to her her nephew Grady (Michael Horton) submits it to a publisher. It becomes a runaway bestseller and suddenly she is one of the most acclaimed authors in the country traveling worldwide week after week but always returning to her cozy Maine hometown of Cabot Cove. There’s just one small thing, wherever she goes murder happens!! And that cozy town has more deaths by foul play per capita than New York City! But fret not Jessica with a mixture of observation, common sense, intelligence and intuition is on the case to save the day!

    1. You did mention that! I think it's so cool when the places we live in are on screen. All I get is the Fargo movie/TV series which are never actually shot in Fargo. lol

Oh man, Murder, She Wrote. My mom LOVED that series so I watched a lot of it with her. The other two sound interesting, I love the lead actresses involved. I already miss Diana Rigg. Her Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones is iconic.

  3. I so wish I could see the first one and also the second sounds great because I love those 2 as well. Maybe...one day, I can see these if they come to regular cable. I never even heard of the last one but that coat looks really nice. Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. I have seen two of the three and liked only the first one. The Undoing didn't do it for me. Love that you combined this week with Girl Week!

  6. Thanks for posting again! Unfortunately, I have not see any of these shows. I've heard good things about Mare of Easttown. I might give that a go at some point. And I added this to today's post.

  7. The Undoing - I did not like her coat.
I like Mare of Easttown as well.
Nine Perfect Strangers - just finished seeing this recently and yes it is weird. But like you, I love Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Canavalle in this...they were so cute and funny together.

  9. Great idea to combine the TMP with Girl Week blogathon! I ended up participating as well, love the opportunity to highlight women in film.

Ok now I'm gonna give Nine Perfect Strangers a shot... wasn't sure about it at first. Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Canavalle have collaborated a few times right? Love them in SPY!

    1. I loved Spy too! I usually don't care for McCarthy so I was shocked when I loved this so much.

  10. It was fun to see these trend every weekend even though I wasn't watching. I might give Nine Perfect Strangers and The Undoing a try though.
