Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: Rivalries

It's our final Thursday Movie Pick of 2019! This week Wanderer wants us to talk about rivalries in TV series. That's easy enough, there are plenty of those. This post is kind of bitter.

1) True Blood

Eric and Bill had a bit of a rivalry over Sookie. Of course, Eric's fine ass was the right choice. I look back at the first four seasons of this show foundly

2) The Walking Dead

Back before TWD turned into a zombie infested dumpster fire, Shane and Rick had an amazing rivalry. The episode where Rick is forced to kill him - Better Angels - is one of the strongest episodes of the series and was beautifully shot. Not to mention it contains the creepiest ending in the entire series to date.

3) The Office

Dwight and Jim had a rivalry for the ages. To be honest, I'm team Dwight. Fuck Jim. He was boring, and Krasinski is only hot with a beard so he didn't even have that going for him.

  1. The only one of these three that I've seen a quantity of is True Blood which I loved at the beginning and then become tired of as it became more and more ridiculous.

I've seen a few episodes of The Office but it seems to be something that you have to watch faithfully to understand fully.

The third isn't my kind of show.

It wasn't my plan but I ended up with three where the rivals are all women.

The Golden Girls (1985-1992) Three widows and a divorcee-Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur), Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan) and Dorothy’s mother Sophia (Estelle Getty)-share a home and a close friendship in Miami. Along with that friendship comes multiple times when the various women were pitted against each other in rivalries for men, bowling trophies or just the plain upper hand. Timeless comedy with four of the best comic actresses ever.

Dynasty (1981-1989) Blake Carrington (John Forsythe) runs oil giant Denver-Carrington while his glamorous scheming ex-wife Alexis (Joan Collins) and present wife Krystle (Linda Evans) are locked in a constant rivalry which escalates through the years. In the era of conspicuous consumption this show reigned supreme and set the tone for over the top luxury (and shoulder pads!) with Collins leading the way.

Revenge (2011-2015) Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) arrives in the Hamptons and immediately crosses swords with reigning doyenne Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe) who feels she isn’t who she appears to be. Her intuition is right Emily is actually Amanda Clarke whose father Victoria and her husband had destroyed years before and now she’s back to extract revenge. Week after week the two go head to head in a rivalry that becomes increasingly deadly as Emily/Amanda seeks to ruin Victoria’s family and life.

    1. I've never actually seen Golden Girls even though they're so popular. One of the cartoons my son watches references them all the time so he makes Golden Girls jokes and I never have any idea what he's talking about.

The Office is one of those shows I think you can pick up any time. It's mostly about the jokes. I liked it, but never loved it.

    2. Oh you have to catch up with The Golden Girls! Those four women are all so talented, the writing sharp and the situations they deal with timeless. It's one like The Office you can pick up anywhere but it's best to start at the beginning to understand all the relationships. The quality stayed consistently strong throughout.

    3. I will definitely watch some episodes eventually!

  2. I think the only episodes of TWD I really watched and not just while keeping only one eye on the screen were with Bernthal, him and Rick constantly being at odds was interesting to watch then the show just descended into a bunch of different antoganists that weren't all that intimidating or gripping

    1. TWD has always had a villain problem. The Governor wasn't bad but then we got two fucking bottle episodes about him. Make it stop. lol

  3. Team Eric all the fucking way. At least he's honest, even when he lies. Plus, he's way more attractive than Beeelll.

  4. Hell yes to Shane vs Rick. Totally agree about True Blood - it was good for the first four seasons and then went downhill. I met the actor who played Godric at a con, and he was super nice. But the shame of throwing so much shade at Jim and Krasinski!! O_o I'M SHOCKED. Great picks!

    1. Allan Hyde! I love that guy, I watched a Danish short film he was in around the time he had his run in True Blood and he was excellent in that too.

      lol I'm sorry I can't with Krasinski

    1. Shane's death made sense but TWD has always had a showrunner problem.

  9. I love all these rivalries.

True Blood - I think I only saw until S4.
The Walking Dead - their rivalry was intense.
The office - I like Jim and their rivalry is funny.

    1. I like to pretend True Blood ended after S4. Nothing that happened afterwards was satisfying.
