Thursday Movie Picks: 2018 Releases

This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves wants us to look back at 2018. I decided to choose three films that surprised me with how much I liked them.

1) Searching

When my theater opened Searching, I had never heard of it, so I watched the trailer and it looked like a really basic thriller, but I like John Cho and had nothing to do, so I went anyways. So glad I did because this was really enjoyable and they made the most of the gimmicks they used.

2) Dumplin'

I cried like a baby in this. It was just so sweet. Sometimes I forget that I need to watch movies where nice things happen, I'm always drawn to darker things.

3) Blindpsotting

When I saw the trailer for this, I thought it looked like so many other movies I had seen like it and upon watching it, it didn't check any of the boxes I expected it too. I really wish I would've gotten to see this in theaters and given them some of my money because it was extraordinary.

  3. Wow, I haven't seen any of these. I didn't like Dumplin' as a book so I'll give the movie a try but won't expect to like it. I did try Blindspotting a bit but I wasn't feeling it, maybe one day. Also, Searching, really need to see it.

    1. I didn't even know Dumplin' was a book, or I forgot. It works as a cute little film.

  4. Yup..I screwed up and posted next week's theme..I was wondering when i would do that. I realized, too, that I had only seen 1 film from 2018 which is horrible. You are the 2nd person to comment on Searching and i did hear about it so I will search this movie out and watch it (pun intended). I don't know your other 2 picks but am interested in Dumplin'

  7. I don't remember if Searching was at my theater but I do want to see it as well as Blindspotting. Dumplin' I'm iffy about yet I do like Danielle Macdonald a lot after seeing her in Patti Cake$ as I'm sure it's a better choice than Bird Box.

  8. I've seen them all! Searching was sooooo unexpectedly good. And Cho carried it all by himself.

Dumplin' gave me the same feeling. I tend to be drawn to darker things also, but this was too sweet to resist.

I need to rewatch Blindspotting. I saw it late at night and was in and out of it at a couple points. I really liked it, but I feel like I missed something. Hopefully, I'll get back to it, soon.

  9. We share Searching! It basically came out of nowhere and blew us all away. I didn't like Dumplin' as much as you, but I almost cried myself. I haven't seen Blindspotting but it's on my list.

  10. "Sometimes I forget that I need to watch movies where nice things happen, I'm always drawn to darker things." So relateable. I've been drawn to a lot of mystery/thriller/dark films lately, but it's the nicer films that end up staying with me longer and more enjoyable. Nice picks!
