Thursday Movie Picks - TV Edition: 2018 Freshman Series

The first TV theme of 2019 from Wandering Through The Shelves is about looking back at the new shows 2018 gave us. The problem for me is, I didn't actually pick up any new ongoing series. Everything new that I watched and enjoyed in 2018 was limited series. So here are some shows I started watching, but haven't finished.

1) Barry

Barry won big at the Emmys and I normally enjoy Bill Hader but I found this to be incredibly dull. I only made it through four episodes before I gave up. This wasn't for me.

2) Succession

Admittedly, I keep starting the first episode and getting distracted by other things. I do really like Kieran Culkin so I might try harder but the pilot doesn't do much for me.

3) The Bodyguard

Richard Madden is insanely hot and I started watching this Netflix show for him. It's interesting at times, but not consistently enough for me to want to binge this quickly. I've been stuck on episode 5 or 6 for quite some time.

  1. Haven't seen any of these shows. Too bad they didn't turn out better for you. I really had nothing to offer this week, so I bowed out.

    1. It's been a while since I got hooked on a new TV show. I think my last one was The Handmaid's Tale? That's kind of sad, especially since a few of my go tos are ending this year.

  2. I only watched 3 new series last year 😅 I haven't seen any of these but The Bodyguard is on my watchist because of Madden

    1. He's hot so that makes up for a lot of the show's shortcomings.

  4. You is the only new show I watched from 2018 so I haven't been able to scrape enough together this week!
I've heard so many great things about The Bodyguard, I really need to actually get on with is.

    1. I've heard good things about You, I might try that after I clear out my movies in my instant queue.

  5. I like all three of those actors but haven't seen any of their shows and from what you say I don't think I need to make a point of it.

Geez I'm not doing so great so far this year! There is only one new show I've been following-The Rookie with Nathan Fillion which I've been enjoying but that's not enough to join in so maybe next week will get me back in the loop.

  6. I saw only one episode of Succession and gave up, so weird it's from someone who wrote The Thick of It, the show just wasn't funny for me. I need to check out Bodyguard at last

    1. It wasn't, but I'm not sure if it's meant to be either. i was expecting it to feel a bit like Veep and it definitely didn't.

  7. I saw bits of Barry and it's not for me. Then again, I don't watch a lot of new TV shows.

  8. I heard Barry is supposed to be quite good but I won’t see it since I don’t have Netflix as you know. I don’t even know the others.

    1. Barry belongs to HBO, so it would be on their Go or NOW apps, but I really just couldn't get into it.

  10. I don't usually watch comedy series, so I haven't watched Barry, but to be honest, I am not interested. As for Bodyguard, I really liked it. The shooting scene in episode 2 or 3 was amazing, and you should definitely watch the last episode, it's the most interesting and WTF

  11. Bodyguard - haha he is...that's probably why for a time it was like the hottest new show, at least that's what IMDB tells me. I recommend Line of Duty, which is by the same creator, it is a better series with a lot of twist and turns and is an ongoing series.
