Thursday Movie Picks - Romance Tropes Editions: Enemies to Lovers

We're starting a new edition over at Wandering Through The Shelves, and for the entire month of February we're talking romantic tropes. This is probably going to be hard for me. Up first, we're talking about the age old enemies to lovers trope. Honestly, I associate this with fan fiction more than any other medium at this point. Here's what I came up with.

1) 10 Things I Hate About You -
My all time favorite rom com features two high school seniors who are polar opposites and frequently antagonize each other until they find themselves falling in love. I adore this movie.

2) Silver Linings Playbook -
While not technically "enemies" there was enough animosity between the two leads for me to count it here. I really like this movie, it's held up really well for me over the years, even though I know plenty have soured on it.

3) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -
The worst Star Wars movie is actually on brand this week. I'm shocked they actually went there with this. Then I go back to being sad because this movie was so awful.

  1. I have seen your first 2 films and prefer the first over the 2nd. How I miss Heath Ledger. The second flick is good but I find the leads irritating. I have only seen the first of the last ugh first that came out last..ughh....whatever. Whom is she kissing...hopefully not her brother or cousin? Whatever..hahahaa. You can see my indifference to these movies.

  2. I was SO mad at the Rise of Skywalker. It wasn't even just the Reylo stuff, it was everything. As much as people complained about the Last Jedi, I preferred it to that mess.

    1. I really enjoyed The Last Jedi. It really boggles my mind how people somehow hate that one more than TROS.

    2. SAME! I enjoyed TLJ too!! I'll never get it and I wish they had let someone else do that final part.

    3. Even the script Colin Trevorrow wrote for it was garbage. they should've just let Rian finish it.

  3. Ooh 10 Things is such a great pick! I almost went with Silver Linings Playbook too because I love Pat and Tiffany. As for Rey and Kylo... oh man. I remember cringing SO hard in the theater when that happened. Just... WHY.

  4. We match on 10 Things.
I didn't like Silver Linings Playbook the first time. I saw a bit of it again later when it was once again on TV. It sort of seem better the second time, but I still overall don't really like it.

    1. Aww that's too bad. I really dug it. I just wish the director wasn't such an asshole.

  5. Yeah, I've seen all 3 of these films and while I don't mind re-watching 10 Things I Hate About You only to see Andrew Keegan gets his ass kicked by a girl. Silver Linings Playbook is a film I'll watch if it's on but I don't think it's as great as it was. The Rise of Skywalker... I don't have the urge to re-watch it as it was just.... eh...

I went on a different route but with a video clip of where really the enemies turned lovers trope really goes to.

  6. 10 Things is a sweet movie that could have been improved with a different leading lady. Julia Stiles' allure has always escaped me though she's passable but all three of the other prominent players are so much better than she.

Hate is too strong a word for my reaction to Silver Linings Playbook, indifference maybe or underwhelmed. Loaded with good actors, with the bonus of being filmed relatively close to me-close enough to recognize the locations-it still didn't work well for me.

I've only seen the original Star Wars trilogy and while (after seeing them on a big screen) not disliking them I've never felt the slightest pull to see any of the myriad follow-ups.

I thought of The Shop Around the Corner from 1940 (it's the original story that both Judy Garland's In the Good Old Summertime & the bland Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan You've Got Mail used as inspiration), The Bachelor & the Bobby-Soxer (which if you haven't seen you really must. The cast is headed by Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and in her best teen movie your girl Shirley Temple) and Pillow Talk with Doris Day and Rock Hudson.

    1. I love Julia Stiles, but I also grew up with her as a "teen queen" so I'm a bit bias.

I need to see The Shop Around The Corner!

  7. I loved SLP, so I hope it holds up for me whenever I go back. Your first pick is my fave of the bunch, as the time when Julia Stiles ruled the earth *cue falling banner* means so much to me. Great picks.
