Thursday Movie Picks - Romantic Tropes: Famous Person and Non-Famous Person

This weeks theme from Wandering Through the Shelves is another romantic trope! This week we're talking about romances with famous people and the rest of us regular folk. I don't love a lot of movies with this trope, but here's what I came up with.

1) Hairspray -
Link may only be locally famous but we're counting him and Tracy. This is one of my favorite musicals.

2) Lost in Translation -
Bob and Charlotte are quite the pair. While this might not necessarily be considered a romance, it's still a very deep connection.

3) Win a Date with Tad Hamilton -
Funny story, I met Josh Duhamel around the time this came out and the person that introduced us mentioned I worked at the movie theater so I had to tell him I liked this. I lied, it's garbage.

  1. I have to see Hairspray, the original too. I really enjoyed Lost In Translation and found it enjoyable but how I wish I knew what was said at the end. I have not seen the last one because it didn’t look good in the trailers.

    1. I know! Lost in Translation's whisper will bother everyone for the rest of our lives.

  2. Both versions of Hairspray are fun though the John Walters original has a darker sharper edge. My cousin worked on that one doing some of the hair and said that Divine was just the nicest person. The newer one is bright, shiny and peppy, though Travolta is all wrong but the other performers compensate.

I put off Lost in Translation for years because it looked boring but finally watched it about two years ago. I didn't love it nor hate it. The leads were good but I'll never watch it again.

Garbage is a bit harsh for Tad Hamilton. It was wafer thin and completely forgettable but innocuous enough. I like Josh Duhamel, I remember him playing Leo on All My Children as a near baby, but the movies he's in are usually weak.

The first thing that popped into my head was Notting Hill which despite my fondness for Hugh Grant I thought was godawful. The other was any version of A Star is Born though by the end Esther/Vicki/Ally is more famous than Norman/Jackson so I'm not sure it would really work.

    1. I wish Divine was still with us. I didn't hate Travolta, but it's hard to follow Divine (or Harvey Fierstein for that matter)

Ahh that's true. A Star is Born would've worked well here.

  3. Lovely choices for this week!! I wouldn't have thought of Hairspray myself, but it definitely counts and I'm not big on musicals, but I liked that one a lot.
I just finished the second season of Starstruck, which would fit this category perfectly, but it's a show and not a movie haha

  4. While I prefer the original Hairspray, I did like the musical remake. Of course, you know my feelings about.... THE BEST FILM EVER MADE!!!!!!!! Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! is shit although Josh Duhamel, post-Fergie, is coming across as just a nice dude. I like him as the new coach for The Mighty Ducks series as I feel so bad for Martin Sheen to have one son being an anti-vaxxer and another son just being an all-around fuck-up.

    1. Martin Sheen's family is...something. I haven't seen a ton of Duhamel lately, but I plan on watching that new show he has on Peacock.

  5. I've seen all your picks.
Hairspray is a musical I've seen where I don't remember a single song from it.
