Thursday Movie Picks - Second Chances at Love

This week's romantic trope theme from Wandering Through The Shelves is second chances at love! Or as it could also be called; "Trying really hard not to pick The Notebook." I swear I pick that movie every year when we have romantic themes. Thankfully, I did find something to replace it with. Here are a few films I enjoy where the characters get that second chance.

1) The Lunchbox -
This movie is about a man whose lunchbox is mixed up in a delivery service and is instead connected to a lonely housewife. They communicate with letters left in the lunchbox. I adore this movie so much. It's so sweet and pure and I miss the late Irrfan Khan.

2) Forgetting Sarah Marshall -
This is high on my favorite comedy list. After a recent breakup, Peter takes a Hawaiian vacation, ends up at the same resort as his ex, yet falls in love. It's so much fun and Jason Segel has a very memorable introduction into this movie.

3) Marry Me -
A recent watch made the list! Both Kat and Charlie have been married before, so this is their second (and 3rd, 4th) chance at love.

  1. I would like to see that first movie and the last one, I think I will wait until it's on TV but we shall see. I laughed a lot at Sarah Marshall. It can be crude but it's funny. I have had more than one love but the best is always the last.

  2. We share a pick with Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That is a great movie and funny as fuck. Yeah, I would go for Mila Kunis over Kristen Bell though I do enjoy both ladies. I just think Kunis is pretty despite being married to an imbecile.

  3. I haven't even seen the trailer of Marry Me, only saw the poster and synopsis, but it sounds fun so I want to see it.

  4. The only one I've seen is Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I liked more than I expected to when I walked into the theatre. Mila Kunis is a very beautiful girl.

Is that Owen Wilson in Marry Me? If so I can't abide him so I'll never see that film.

I instantly thought of The Philadelphia Story and the love/hate relationship between Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. That then made me think of the musicalized remake High Society with Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly (this was her final film before she retired to become Princess of Monaco) taking over the leads with Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm taking over for Jimmy Stewart and Ruth Hussey.

    1. lol. Yes, that's Owen Wilson. You should check out The Lunchbox, I think you'd really like it. A Philadelphia story is one I need to see.

    2. I think you'll really like The Philadelphia Story. It's the film that brought Kate Hepburn back from her box office poison label. She had been a big star in the early 30's at RKO but several of her more recent films had underperformed and when the studio tried to cast her in an obvious B movie she bought out her contract and skipped town for a couple of years. During that time she collaborated with her friend playwright Philip Barry who styled the original play The Philadelphia Story specifically for her. She cannily bought the screen rights before the play opened on Broadway and when it was a huge success she brokered a deal with MGM that included her as the star with casting approval. She requested Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy for the two male leads but both were committed to other projects so she turned to her good friend Cary Grant, who was a freelancer, and the white hot at the moment James Stewart. She did costar with Tracy in her next film Woman of the Year which led to their involvement for the rest of his life.

It's a witty, observant comedy with some serious underlying ideas which hit big when it came out and won Jimmy a Best Actor Oscar (though it was really a make up award for his performance the year before in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington).

The later remake is equally solid plus it features a great duet between Bing and Frank.

  8. I love all three of your choices, but Forgetting Sarah Marshall is probably the one I've seen the most. Do you know what the German title of the film is? "Nie wieder Sex mit der Ex", which basically translates to "Never Again Sex with the Ex" ... much more forward title haha
