Thursday Movie Picks: Business
This week's theme from Wandering Through The Shelves are movies about businesses. I love a good fast paced work place movie so my picks came very quickly to me.
1) The Big Short - I've been wanting to rewatch this film about investors betting on the US housing market for a while. Maybe talking about it today will give me the push to finally get around to it.
2) The Wolf of Wall Street - I was recently talking to someone about my favorite Scorcese movie and this one is definitely near the top.
3) The Social Network - Remember when Jesse Eisenberg was so good at playing Mark Zuckerberg people refused to see him as anything else?
I enjoyed The Big Short. Terrific cast paired with a compelling story well presented. I did not however care for The Social Network at all. Good acting about horrible people. I have avoided Wolf of Wall Street because of my understanding that it contains a ridiculous amount of foul language. It's not that I'm a prude and don't swear but when a film is strewn with it I glaze over and disengage from the story. I think it's a sign of lazy scriptwriting.
ReplyDeleteHmmm this is sort of short order cooking here since I read Birgit's post first and was all tuned up with women's revenge flicks (not quite sure why I guess one of these two is next week's) so the first three that come to mind about business would be 2015's Joy with Jennifer Lawrence as an ambitious and clever young woman who founds a business that becomes enormously successful. 1960's From the Terrace wherein Paul Newman ruthlessly builds a aircraft company by clawing his way to the top marrying scheming faithless socialite Joanne Woodward (never more glamorous) along the way until he sees the light. Finally 1945's Mildred Pierce where divorcee Joan Crawford tirelessly builds a successful restaurant chain to give her succubus of a daughter Veda everything she desires only to be burned by the worthless trollop and the man she once loved.
There is quite a bit of cursing but for me it didn't distract from the story. It makes sense given their environment. I completely agree with your sentiment though. That's the main reason I hate Rob Zombie movie's.
DeleteI think Female Revenge is next week...unless I'm off, in which case whoops. Mildred Pierce is great! Joy I've seen parts of, but not all of it.
This week is Female Revenge. Still, I have no qualms about this list. Especially The Wolf of Wall Street as I just love that film as it is the closest thing to Scorsese and Leo doing low-brow humor and boy do they deliver. I WILL NOT DIE SOBER!!!!!! I had never laughed so fucking hard in my life over any film I had seen in the theaters.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had the wrong list. I laughed so hard I almost cried when I saw Wolf of Wall Street the first time. Amazing film.
DeleteYou've got the wrong theme. Earlier in the year, I think i mentioned in one of my TMP posts that I inadvertently had done extra weeks in 2022 and had to delete some themes and updated the schedule accordingly. Please refer to the updated schedule https://wanderingthroughtheshelves.blogspot.com/2022/01/2021-thursday-movie-picks-schedule-final.html
ReplyDeleteI remember that, and I thought I did update my list...whoops!
DeleteI’m confused...I thought it was female revenge week. Oh well, this wouldn’t be the first time I chose the wrong week. I couldn’t get into Wolf of Wall Street due to how ugly it is...way too much swearing and I like a good swearing but this was excessive along with the hookers and the guys lined up to get some...no..didn’t like that movie. I can’t stand The Social Network...really hate that movie and can’t stand the actor who seems to be as arrogant as Zuckerberg. I watched the Big Short again because, to be honest, I felt lost. Maybe my brain cells were not fired up.
ReplyDeleteApparently I had the wrong week! But I'm too lazy at this point to go back and fix it, so Business it is lol.
DeleteThree great picks!
